The route between each special is known as a "liaison" or "transit" and is run at normal road speeds. Roads in the specials are closed to public traffic, essentially turning the route into a private competition zone. Rallies typically consist of several stages and competitors aim to score the lowest combined time in the specials without incurring any penalties during the transit sections.
